A Year of Healthy Habits

Meet Amy O’Grady. She was raised on a farm just outside of Cameron where her family raised and process the majority of their own food. “Looking back, these memories have shaped the food loving person I have become”.  After Amy graduated from Cameron High School in 1999, she went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology from Kansas State University while working full-time and raising three children.

Amy is the Director of Nutrition Services at Cameron Regional Medical Center (CRMC) and has been for the last nine years.  She is also Certified Dietary Manager and has earned several other food safety and quality related certifications. “My expertise is in food safety, nutrition, menu planning, food preparation and time management”.  She fully understands the struggle in our fast-paced culture to stay healthy and make nutritious decisions.

Through a series of weekly columns titled “Healthy Habits” and a new community outreach program at CRMC, Amy hopes to encourage us to make small changes, related to nutrition and exercise, and promote a healthy community. “The foods we choose matter…What I learned throughout my studies is our current food system isn’t designed to keep us healthy, it is designed to keep us craving more. Fortunately, many of the consequences of being overweight or obese (heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, sleep apnea, decreased energy, low quality of life, depression, anxiety, and a shorter life span) can be treated and prevented through diet and exercise”.

Over the course of the next 52 weeks, Amy will cover a variety of topics including curbing cravings, healthy snacking, whole grains, kitchen organization, GMO/Non-GMO foods, and many more.   Each article will include a new healthy habit that can be easily incorporate into your daily routine to make 2019 your year of healthy transformation.
