Eastern China Earthquake: Houses Toppled, 10 Injured, No Fatalities Reported

An earthquake struck eastern China before dawn on Sunday, causing houses to topple and injuring at least 21 people, according to state media. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.5, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center, occurred near Dezhou, located about 300 kilometers south of Beijing, at 2:33 a.m.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the magnitude at 5.4. The impact of the quake led to the collapse of 126 homes, leaving 21 individuals injured. Authorities were inspecting train lines for potential damage, and gas services were disrupted in certain areas due to pipe damage.

“The closer to the surface the earthquake is, the stronger you are going to feel it,” said Abreu Paris, a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center.

Tremors were also felt in parts of Beijing, but the capital city did not experience any significant damage.
