Have You Missed the Deadline to Claim Your Child Tax Credit or Stimulus Money? What You Need to Know

If you didn’t claim your child tax credit or third stimulus check by last night’s deadline, we’ll tell you what you need to do.

The deadline for reporting any unclaimed stimulus or child tax credit payments for this year has passed, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get your money. Even though the IRS Free Submit form is no longer available, you can still file your taxes in 2023 and get back any money you are owed.

This year, about 9 million people who haven’t gotten their money yet did not file a tax return, either because they didn’t have to or because they needed more time. The IRS used tax returns to figure out both of these payments.

Read on to find out what you can do to get any stimulus funds or child tax credits that are due to you. To find out more, check to see if your state is sending out stimulus checks this month.

When Was the Deadline to Apply for Stimulus or Child Tax Credits?

Those who use the IRS Free File tool had until 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday, November 17 to file for missing stimulus or child tax credit money. The Free File tool is for people who don’t have to file taxes because they don’t make enough money.

If you had to file a tax extension earlier this year or still haven’t, the deadline to do so was October 17. That was also the last day to send in Form 1040 without getting a penalty for filing late.

You have until February 15, 2023, to file a claim if you were hurt by a recent natural disaster, like Hurricane Ian. But if you live in a state, like Kentucky or Missouri, where the Federal Emergency Management Agency has declared a disaster, the deadline to file was Tuesday, November 15

Have You Filed a Tax Return but Haven’t Received Your Refund Yet? Here’s What Might Be the Issue:

If you filed your taxes this year but haven’t gotten your stimulus check or money from the child tax credit yet, there could be a few other reasons.

  • You don’t have any money in the bank.
  • You had never done this before.
  • You live in a home with a mix of people.
  • You haven’t told the IRS or the USPS that you’ve moved.
  • You don’t have a home.
  • You can’t connect to the internet or can’t connect at all.

If none of these are true, you should call the IRS at 800-919-9835 or mail Form 3911 to request a payment trace.
