Universal basic income is a guaranteed monthly payout.
They are not to be confused with stimulation checks.

Most of these new initiatives offer $500 monthly payouts for a year.

In other circumstances, it occurs just occasionally.

Since the outbreak, numerous states and communities have tested UBI programs using American Rescue Act monies.

States and localities have helped citizens by granting monthly payments.

Here is a list of programs that pay $500 monthly.

1.  Ann Arbor

The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funded this huge city in Michigan with $24.2 million, $1.6 million of which went to a new UBI program.

The Ann Arbor City Council recently approved the program for impacted families.

The city will give 100 households $500 monthly for three years.

Ann Arbor is working on a website that will take applications in four to six weeks.

2.  Cambridge

Cambridge RISE, a UBI initiative, debuted in June 2021.

For single caregiver households, the 18-month trial program was designed.

The program gives monthly payments of $500 to 130 residents to help them become more financially stable.

3.  Chicago

The city council adopted a budget in October that contained 5,000 $500 monthly payments for a year.

The $31.5 million Chicago Resilient Communities Pilot aims to end poverty and assist residents to recover from the pandemic.

The city will give 5,000 households $500 per month for a year.

Residents can apply here starting this month.

4. Columbia

A city program in Columbia, South Carolina, helps struggling fathers.

In the fall, 100 low-income fathers in Columbia received $500 debit cards.

They’ll keep getting paid for months.

5.  Denver

Denver will use UBI later this year.

The Denver Basic Income Project will divide eligible individuals into three groups at random.

260 people will get $6,500 initially and $500 monthly for 11 months.

Another 260 people will get $1,000 every month for a year.

In a comparison group, 300 people will get $50 every month for a year.

Guaranteed Monthly $500 Payment

Qualifications:

  • Must be linked to a partner service provider
  • Must be homeless: living in hotels and campgrounds
  • Sharing housing owing to loss of housing, financial trouble, etc.
  • Living in abandoned houses, parks, or cars
  • Living in transitory or emergency shelters
  • People who spend the night in a public or private space not intended for or normally used for sleeping
  • Those without significant unmet mental health or substance use needs
  • Must be 18 or older

6. Durham

The North Carolina city inaugurated its Excel trial program in January 2022, awarding 115 ex-offenders $500 monthly for a year.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey supplied most of the $700,000 pilot program cash.

Participants must be 18 or older.

There is no employment requirement, however, your income must not exceed 60% of the area’s median.

Recent incarceration and a household income of 60% or less of the area median income are required.

7.  Gary

 In May 2021, Gary, Indiana, began its Guaranteed Income Validation Effort (GIVE).

125 residents were chosen at random to receive $500 per month for a year.

The cash is unrestricted and requires no work.

8. Mpls

Minneapolis will launch its guaranteed basic income pilot program this spring.

200 families will be chosen to receive $500 monthly for two years.

To be eligible in Minneapolis, individuals must have a yearly income at or below 50% of the area median income, be affected by the epidemic, and live in a certain zip code.

It runs from Spring 2022 until Spring 2024.

Applications are no longer accepted.

9.  Newark

Newark, New Jersey, will also offer $500 monthly payments for two years, totaling $12,000 over two years.

The city says half of the individuals in the program will get $250 monthly and the other half would get $3,000 twice a year.

The program’s residents were chosen after applying online through the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Guaranteed Income Research.

Residents were chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Must earn less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line
  • Be harmed by the COVID-19 epidemic

With the expansion of the program, 400 residents will benefit.

10. Philly

Philadelphia launched a year-long guaranteed income experimental program in March 2022.

The winners were picked from a pool of 1,100 TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) clients.

11.  Pittsburg

Pittsburgh will give 200 low-income families $500/month for two years.

This was reported by Pittsburgh’s NPR News Station in December 2021.

Assuming they get paid for the full 24 months, that’s $12,000 a piece.

Mr. Dorsey also pledged $15 million to programmes in Pittsburgh and other communities.

12.  Rochester

Council approved a two-year experimental program in December 2021.

During the first year, the initiative will grant $500 to 175 low-income Rochester, NY families.

The next year, another set of 175 Rochester, NY households would get $500 monthly.

The benefits will go to families living at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty threshold.

Incoming Mayor Malik Evans supports the program but wants to look into private and charitable funding, which means higher payments to families.

 13.  Tacoma

Growing Resilience In Tacoma is a guaranteed income program in Tacoma, Washington (GRIT).

The program provides a $500 monthly stipend to 110 low-income families for a year.

Every month until November 2022, families will be paid on the 15th.

Applicants will be chosen at random and must meet these criteria:

  • Must live in Eastside (98404), Hilltop (98405), South Tacoma (98409), or the South End (98408)
  • Must be a single-income household with children up to 17 and disabled children up to 21.
  • Must be employed and have income between 100 and 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.
  • You might get nearly $800 in food stamps.
