San Diego Authorities Captured Suspects in Granny Annie’s Murder Case
San Diego, CA—In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, two San Diego teenagers have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Annette Pershal, a 68-year-old unhoused woman affectionately known as “Granny Annie” by locals.
The incident occurred on May 8, when Pershal was found unconscious on the street. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, where medical professionals discovered she had been shot multiple times with a pellet gun.
Despite their best efforts, Pershal succumbed to her injuries a few days later, and her death was ruled a homicide, leaving the neighborhood in grief and disbelief.
The authorities have taken swift action, and on Friday, they apprehended Ryan Hopkins, 19, and William Innes, 18, on suspicion of murder. The teenagers are scheduled to appear in court on Monday afternoon, facing serious charges related to the brutal killing of a beloved community member.
According to statements from Annette Pershal’s daughter, Brandy Nazworth, her mother suffered a horrific ordeal at the hands of her attackers.
Pershal was repeatedly struck by a pellet gun loaded with metal bullets, one of which hit her shoulder and chest, nicking a major artery and causing internal bleeding and multiple strokes.
She was also hit in the head and hip and never regained consciousness, said Nazworth.
Personal struggles marked Pershal’s journey to homelessness. Following the passing of her boyfriend around 2017, she lost her home when her mother was forced to sell the property. Her circumstances worsened, and she found herself without a permanent place to stay.
Despite efforts to help her, including a stint at a rehabilitation center, she ended up back on the streets due to various challenges, including anti-camping policies and the loss of her shelter and belongings.
A Community in Mourning
The Nazworths had initially planned to visit San Diego to assist Pershal but were instead faced with organizing a memorial in her honor. The tragic loss of “Granny Annie” has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her, as she was a cherished member of the community.
Brandy Nazworth, who resides in Louisiana, described her mother as a free-spirited and caring person.
Pershal never complained about life on the streets, her daughter added. “She’d tell me about people who would say hello to her every morning. She’d always say everything is ‘okie dokie.’ She was kind of a hippie. I’d like her remembered as someone who was full of love—for people, animals, for everybody.”
As the legal process unfolds and the community seeks closure and justice, the memory of Annette Pershal will endure in the hearts of those whose lives she touched. Her tragic fate also serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges unhoused individuals face and the importance of compassion and support for the most vulnerable members of society.
