Snap Ebt: Can You Use Your Snap Ebt Card at a Gas Station?

Some locations are seeing gas prices reaching $4 a gallon, and those on a fixed income may be finding it difficult to make ends meet as we approach the weekend.

Many people ask whether they may use their EBT card, which is issued by the program formerly known as food stamps, at a petrol station.

“Perhaps,” is the answer to that question. In some cases, depending on your government benefits, you may even be able to use EBT-Cash for fuel and other gas station purchases – but not EBT from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Understanding the differences between TANF and SNAP

Before we get started, let’s take a quick look at some of the programs that are available to assist low-income families around the United States,

such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

A food stamp program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as food stamps) provides benefits to families in the form of an electronic debit card,

which can be used to purchase food, nonalcoholic beverages, ingredients for meals, and seeds at grocery stores and other retailers that accept EBT as a form of payment.

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program also provides an EBT card (known as EBT Cash), which can be used to pay for a larger range of living expenses,

such as fuel, housing, home maintenance supplies, personal hygiene products, and other necessities. You can also use your ETC Cash card to make cash withdrawals from an ATM machine.

Is it Possible to Use Your EBT Card at Gas Stations in California?

EBT/food stamps and EBT-Cash cards are accepted at a large number of gas stations around the United States.

In addition to huge businesses such as 7-Eleven, Circle K, Cumberland Farms, Flying J, and Exxon Mobil, more than 50 gas stations across the country accept EBT.

Using an EBT Cash card at a business that takes EBT allows you to purchase nearly anything in the shop, including personal hygiene goods and food, as well as fill up your vehicle’s gas tank.

No cigarettes, alcohol, vaping products, lottery tickets, scratch-offs, or anything else that cannot be legally acquired by children under the age of eighteen will be available for purchase at this location.

If, on the other hand, your EBT card is only valid for SNAP benefits, you will be even more restricted in the items you can purchase.

Along with the previously mentioned “adult-only” items, you will be unable to purchase fuel, prepared convenience foods, such as pre-cooked hot dogs from a 7-Eleven petrol station,

or foods to go, such as an ice cream cone from Cumberland Farms, at this location. You can, however, purchase milk, bread, butter, and any of the other groceries that are frequently found in petrol stations and convenience stores, if you prefer to.
