Starting on May 3, 2023, the Federal Government Will Begin Enforcing Real Id!

REAL ID is a federal law that regulates how states issue driver’s licences and identification cards in order for them to be accepted for federal purposes, such as boarding a domestic airline or accessing a federal building that requires federally approved identification.

On and after May 3, 2023, a nationally approved form of identification (such as a Pennsylvania REAL ID driver’s licence or ID card, a valid United States passport/passport card, a military ID, etc.) must be used for these purposes.

Residents are not required to obtain a REAL ID; PennDOT continues to issue traditional driver’s licences and picture IDs.

“A year may seem like a long time to prepare, but the deadline will here before you realise it. PennDOT Acting Executive Deputy Secretary Melissa Batula remarked, “We encourage our customers who want a REAL ID to get one as quickly as possible.”

“As the federal deadline approaches, we continue to focus on providing the best possible customer service to all of our consumers.”

“We see plenty of travellers from neighbouring Delaware and New Jersey who fly out of Philadelphia International Airport on a regular basis, and they, like all out-of-state travellers who want to fly after May 3, 2023, will need to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s licence or another acceptable form of ID when approaching our TSA travel document podium,” said TSA Federal Security Director Gerardo Spero.

Starting on May 3, 2023, the Federal Government Will Begin Enforcing Real

“Beginning one year from now, the REAL ID law will apply to all Americans who want to fly out of any domestic airport in the United States. My advice is to receive your upgraded REAL ID driver’s licence from your state’s department of motor vehicles or department of transportation as soon as possible. “Don’t put it off.”

Customers can get a REAL ID by submitting their documentation to any driver’s licencing centre for verification and processing. PennDOT is required by federal regulations to verify the following papers before issuing a REAL ID-compliant product:

Original or certified copy of a birth certificate filed with the State Office of Vital Records/Statistics with a raised seal/embossed or valid, unexpired U.S. Passport are examples of proof of identity.

Social Security Number Proof: Social Security Card in Current Legal Name

Two Proofs of Current, Physical Pennsylvania Address: A current, valid Pennsylvania driver’s licence or identification card, vehicle registration, or a utility bill with the same name and address are examples.

Proof of all legal name changes (if your current legal name differs from your proof of identity document): A certified marriage certificate issued by the County Court for each marriage, a court order approving a change in legal name, or an altered birth certificate issued by the State Office of Vital Records/Statistics are all examples.

A consumer does not need to present documentation of legal name changes if their current name matches what is on their proof of identity document (typically a birth certificate or passport).

Customers can get a REAL ID card in one of three ways: Customers can order their REAL ID online if they have been pre-verified, and their REAL ID product will be mailed to them within 15 business days;

they can visit any PennDOT driver’s licence centre that is open for driver licence services, have their documents verified and imaged, and receive their REAL ID product within 15 business days, or they can visit one of 13 REAL ID Centers and receive their REAL ID product over the counter at the time of service.

Customers pay a one-time price of $30 plus the corresponding renewal fee (currently $30.50 for a four-year non-commercial driver’s licence and $31.50 for a photo ID) when they acquire their first REAL ID product.

Unless the consumer is over 65 and has a two-year licence, the expiration date of their initial REAL ID product will include any time remaining on their previous non-REAL ID product, plus an extra four years.

Customers will not “lose” time that they have already paid for because of the expiration date arrangement. Customers pay no additional expenses to renew a REAL ID product once the first REAL ID product expires, except for ordinary renewal rates.

According to federal standards, REAL ID-compliant products have a gold star in the top right corner, while standard-issue (non-compliant) products include the statement “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES.”
