Tanf & Snap Ebt Theft: Money Stolen From Washington, Dc Residents — How to Seek Assistance if You’ve Been Affected!

Beginning on March 1, the Department of Human Services (DHS) in Washington, DC, began receiving phone calls from people who were unable to access their Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds using their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards.

As reported by The Washington Post, an undisclosed sum of money was taken away from low-income families.
During a preliminary assessment, the Department of Homeland Security discovered a trend that appeared to be consistent with suspected benefits compromise.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Program Review, Monitoring, and Investigation (OPRMI) began collecting data and contacting the appropriate individuals.

“We recognize how important benefits assistance is to our citizens, and the theft of these vital services is abhorrent,” said Laura Green Zeilinger, Director of the Department of Human Services, in a press statement.

“I’d like to be quite clear about three things,” Zeilinger stated. We will work with our families to replace funds that have been wrongfully taken from their accounts;

we will work closely with law enforcement to ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable; and, finally, residents can protect their benefits and deter potential bad actors by following our advice to change their PIN numbers as soon as possible,” says the mayor.

The Department of Homeland Security advised those who believe their public assistance benefits have been compromised to file a report with the Metropolitan Police Department by calling 311 or (202) 265-9100 if they are located outside of Washington, DC, and reporting a financial or cybercrime to the department.
