Inflation has been at 40-year highs for the past few months, making it hard to avoid news about the US economy. CNBC says that on November 2, the Fed raised interest rates again, making them the highest they’ve been since the 2008 housing market crash.
With the economy in such bad shape and so many people still not able to get back on their feet, some federal and state agencies have sent out stimulus checks to help.
Checks are still being sent to people who sent in their tax returns by the Oct. 17 deadline for an extension. Here’s what’s going on in the United States.
National: Stimulus & Child Tax Credit Payments in 2021
The last time the government gave out stimulus checks was in 2021, but as GOBankingRates has reported, about 9 million people have not yet gotten their money.
People who haven’t filed their 2021 tax return have mostly missed out on last year’s stimulus payments, earned income tax credits, child tax credits, and other benefits.
The department sent letters to people who were eligible and will keep its FreeFile platform open until Nov. 17 so that people who are owed money can easily send in their paperwork and get their money, which is $1,400 for the stimulus payment alone.
Refund for Middle-class Taxpayers in California
In October, the state government of California started giving eligible residents one-time stimulus payments. If the state doesn’t have your bank information on file, they will send you a debit card with your payment on it.
The state’s Franchise Tax Board says that until January 2023, payments of up to $1,050 will be made in alphabetical order by last name.
Amendment to the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights in Colorado
Due to a change to the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights from 1992, residents can get a tax refund of $750 to $1,500 this year. To be eligible, you must have filed a 2021 tax return by June 30, be at least 18 years old, and have lived in the state for the whole year of 2021.
Many payments have already been made, but CNET says that people who asked for an extension by October 17 will get their money by January 31, 2023.
Relief Rebate Program in Delaware
Through the state’s Relief Rebate Program, every adult in Delaware over 18 can get a one-time payment of $300. Since the checks were sent out in early May, many people have already gotten them, but those who haven’t can still get their 2022 relief payment.
You have to ask for the payment and meet the requirements to get it. The time to apply started on November 1, and the last day to do so and earn money is November 30.
State Tax Rebates in Hawaii
Many Hawaii residents have already gotten their one-time tax rebate, but those who will get physical checks started getting them in October. Due to a lack of paper, the checks are being sent out slowly and in small groups.
Each person in a household, including those who live with them, can get $300. This means that a family of four could get $1,200. Residents had to make less than $100,000 if they were single or less than $200,000 if they filed as a couple. If someone goes over these limits, their reimbursement will be cut to $100.
Family Relief Plan in Illinois
CNET says that the state’s income and property tax rebates for 2022 will last until the end of this month. As part of a $1.8 billion relief plan, most people making less than $200,000 will get a $50 check, and couples making less than $400,000 will get a $100 rebate. Also, you can claim up to three dependents for an extra $100 per person.

Checks were sent out
September 12, and it was thought that it would take eight weeks for all residents to get them. If you haven’t gotten yours yet, it should be coming soon.
Indiana Enacts Automatic Tax Refund Law
If an Indiana resident did not get their $125 in stimulus money by November 1, they should contact the state’s revenue department.
Checks took a long time to send out because there wasn’t enough paper, so the governor automatically raised the payment by $200, to $325 per person or $650 for couples who filed their taxes together. The amount may go up if there are deposits or checks.
Refunds Under Chapter 62f in Massachusetts
This month, about 14% of the personal state income taxes that 3 million Massachusetts residents paid in 2021 started coming back to them as tax refunds. Chapter 62F is a tax cap law that says the Department of Revenue has to give money back to residents when taxes go over a certain level.
In 2022, the state had a surplus of $3 billion, which is now being given to the people who live there. Payments will be made in parts until about the middle of December.
Hero Pay in Minnesota
Workers on the front lines in the state can get up to $750 in compensation. People who work in health care or emergency services, in a court, a grocery store, or another retail store are all eligible.
The deadline to apply was July 22, and the Duluth News-Tribune says that 1.2 million people did so. Since that was twice as many as the state expected, the payment amount may be cut. The first payment was made in October, and more are coming.
ANCHOR Program in New Jersey
People who own homes or rent in New Jersey will get stimulus money. Owners whose incomes are up to $150,000 get $1,500, and those whose incomes are between $150,000 and $250,000 get $1,000. Eligible tenants under $150,000 can receive $450.
Applications for the ANCHOR program must be sent to the Division of Taxation by December 30. Payments will start in April 2023.
Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program in Pennsylvania
Low-income homeowners and renters in Pennsylvania get money back. Most homeowners will get $650, but some will get $975 based on their age, whether they are widowed or not, and whether or not they have a disability.
Payments started in September, but not all people who were supposed to get them have them yet. To get money, you must send an application to the state Department of Revenue by December 31.
Child Tax Credit in Rhode Island
As GOBankingRates.com has said before, Rhode Island’s Child Tax Rebate program gives $250 for up to three children or $750 per family.
You must have lived in Rhode Island for the whole year of 2021, and your children must be 18 by the end of the year. For individuals, the limit is $100,000, and for couples filing together, it’s $200,000.
Those who filed their 2021 tax returns by August 31 got checks at the beginning of October. Those who filed by October 17 will get checks as they come.
State Tax Rebates in South Carolina
Residents of South Carolina will get a big chunk of their state income taxes back at the end of this month and in December.
CNET says that 33% of people who paid less than $800 will get their money back in full. People who pay no state income tax will not get a refund.
State Tax Rebates in Virginia
Most people in Virginia have already gotten their $250 or $500 checks, but a few people will still get them. Through the end of the year, 3.2 million people who get paper checks or who filed their state income taxes after September will get their money. Details about the process are on the website of the Virginia Department of Taxation.
