Fire Breaks Out at Burleigh Storage Facility in Cape May Court House, New Jersey

Cape May Court House, New Jersey – A large fire erupted at a storage facility in Cape May Court House early this morning, causing significant damage and prompting emergency response teams to rush to the scene. The fire began at the Burleigh Storage facility at around 8:50 a.m., according to Middle Township Police Chief Tracey Super.

The incident was reported by a police officer who was on patrol when someone alerted him to the blaze. Upon reaching the facility, the officer found the building completely engulfed in flames.

Video footage shared on social media captured thick black smoke pouring from the facility located on Shunpike Road, near Indian Trail Road, in Middle Township. In one video shared on X, fireworks-like flashes were seen shooting from the roof along with the flames, making the situation even more alarming.

“It was pretty wild, something we don’t see every day here,” said Phil Swetsky, the owner of CPS Marine boat yard, which is located next to the storage facility. “It happened pretty quickly. The fire caught on fast and burned intensely right away.”

As the fire raged, emergency crews worked tirelessly to control the flames. The Middle Township Police Department posted a message on Facebook urging residents to avoid the area. Emergency responders faced a tough battle against the growing blaze, made more difficult by high winds.

According to Chief Super, tanker trucks were brought in to deliver water to the site. The wind posed a major challenge to the firefighting efforts, and fire crews had to deal with smaller fires that spread to the wooded area across the street. However, these fires were quickly contained.

Unfortunately, the damage to the storage facility was significant, with more than 50 units affected by the fire. Fortunately, only one person was injured. Police reported that the individual was taken to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, though their condition has not been revealed.

The Cape May County Fire Marshal’s office has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, but no official cause has been determined yet.
