Castro Valley, CA — A routine traffic stop turned fatal early Saturday morning when a high-speed chase on a Bay Area highway resulted in the deaths of two people in a Mercedes sedan, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident began around 3:40 a.m. when officers from the Dublin office observed a white Mercedes traveling at a high rate of speed on westbound Interstate 580 near Eden Canyon Road.

“When officers initiated a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over,” CHP stated in a press release.

Fatal Pursuit and Crash

The situation quickly escalated into a pursuit, heading toward San Leandro. CHP said the Mercedes driver merged onto westbound I-238 and attempted to exit onto East 14th Street.

“For reasons still under investigation, the Mercedes crashed into the soundwall while exiting the freeway,” the press release said. “The officers pursuing the sedan also crashed into the wall.”

First responders arriving at the scene confirmed that the driver and a passenger in the Mercedes were dead. A second passenger was transported to the hospital with major injuries. Both CHP officers involved in the pursuit were hospitalized with major, non-life-threatening injuries.

Ongoing Investigation

CHP’s Golden Gate Division Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is now handling the probe into the crash. Details regarding the cause of the Mercedes’ high-speed maneuvers and the crash itself remain under investigation.

According to SFGATE, authorities are reviewing dashcam footage, witness statements, and other evidence to determine the sequence of events leading to the fatal incident.

Community Impact and Safety Reminder

This tragedy has raised concerns about high-speed pursuits and public safety on Bay Area highways. CHP officials emphasized that officers follow strict guidelines during pursuits to minimize risks to the public while attempting to apprehend fleeing vehicles.

“Pursuits carry inherent dangers for both law enforcement and civilians,” CHP stated. “We urge all drivers to comply with traffic stops to prevent such tragedies.”

Residents are reminded to exercise caution on freeways and to always adhere to traffic laws to prevent similar accidents.
