A baby boy who was abandoned in a shoebox at a fire station has finally found his forever family after an emotional and inspiring journey.
A Heartbreaking Beginning
Many heartbreaking stories emerge of infants being abandoned due to unfortunate circumstances. In Kentucky, one such story unfolded when a newborn baby was left at a fire station, wrapped in a blanket, inside a shoebox. The only thing accompanying him was a handwritten note from his birth mother, explaining why she had to let him go.
Fortunately, under Kentucky’s Safe Infant Act, parents who are unable to care for their infants can legally and anonymously surrender them at designated locations—no questions asked. This law exists to protect children and provide them with a safe future.
When foster mother Brittany Tyler saw the news about the abandoned baby, she immediately hoped that he would be placed in her care. She and her husband, Chris Tyler, had dedicated their lives to fostering medically fragile children. Their wish came true when they got the call to take in the baby boy, whom they later named Samuel.
A Family’s Dream Come True
Brittany and Chris had no idea about Samuel’s background when they first took him in. Over time, they learned about his mother’s difficult decision and the note she left with him. Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, they were determined to give him a loving home.
Samuel, who was extremely fragile at birth, spent his first days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). When the Tylers first saw him, he weighed just over three pounds. The moment Chris held him, he knew Samuel was meant to be part of their family.
“I remember holding him in my arms and knowing right off the bat, ‘This is my boy. This is the next member of our family,’” Chris shared.
After 581 days in foster care, Samuel was officially adopted. Now, at 20 months old, he is thriving in his forever home.
More Than Just One Adoption
Samuel is not the only child Brittany and Chris have welcomed into their home. The couple had previously adopted two boys—Judah (8) and Calvin (5)—through the foster care system. Their deep love for children is evident, as even their doormat humorously warns visitors: “Just so you know, there are a lot of kids here.”
Their journey of growing their family is not over yet. The Tylers are now in the process of adopting another baby girl, making Samuel an older brother. His bond with his older siblings is already strong, and he is eager to embrace his new role.
Keeping the Past Close to Heart
Although Samuel has a new family, his biological mother’s love has not been forgotten. The Tylers kept the handwritten note she left for him, ensuring that one day, when he is older, he will read it and understand the difficult decision she made.
Brittany also transformed Samuel’s baby blanket into a teddy bear, a meaningful keepsake so that “he always has a piece of her.”
The couple hopes that Samuel’s birth mother knows he is safe, loved, and growing up in a home filled with warmth and care.
A Story of Hope and Second Chances
This incredible story is a reminder that even in the most difficult circumstances, hope and love can create new beginnings. Brittany and Chris Tyler’s journey proves that family isn’t just about blood—it’s about love, commitment, and the willingness to provide a safe and happy home.
Samuel’s story has touched the hearts of many, showing that even the smallest act of kindness—like opening your home to a child in need—can change lives forever.
